Duties of Acolytes and Readers During Services

 

  Time Into Service Actions
  Processional Order Acolyte, Choir, Priest(s) Reader
Acolyte Entrance    March Crucifer before Procession - Pause before altar - turn left and secure Crucifer
Reader Readings    Rise, genuflect before altar, then to dais for readings
Reader Psalm Congregation Seated
Reader After 2nd Reading Genuflect before Altar, sit
Acolyte Second Hymn    At last verse, rise, get Crucifer, reverence Altar, turn and proceed down into congregation to third pew, stop, turn and face altar
   After reading, lead priest back to Altar, pause, then turn left and secure Crucifer.
Reader Sermon    Count Congregation - make note and pass to Priest when Priest comes beside you for Prayers of People
Reader Prayers of People Kneeling -
   Reader reads Prayers
   Priest reads confessional
  Offertory Hymn Congregation Standing
Acolyte Offertory Hymn    Get Offering Plate, walk to top step between priest and reader daises, and deliver to person(s) gathering offering
Acolyte During Offertory Hymn    After presenting Offering Plate to Laity:
   IF Host is to be presented, wait for Laity to bring Host, then deliver to priest.
   If no Host presentation, return to altar to assist priest's preparations
Acolyte Doxology    As Doxology begins, leave altar area, genuflect before altar, turn and receive Offering plate from Laity at steps between the priest and reader daises.
   Receive Offering Plate, turn, genuflect before altar and give plate to priest.
   Turn and close Communion Rail and adjust cushions.
   Return to stand before your seat and assist with priest's preparations as and if needed.
Acolyte End of Eucharist Open Communion Rail
Acolyte Last Hymn    At beginning of last hymn, rise, genuflect before altar, get Crucifer and stand facing Altar throughout the hymn.
   At last verse (or sooner if appropriate) Priest or Reader will nod to Acolyte to turn and begin Recessional March.
  Recessional Order Acolyte, Choir, Reader, Priest(s)
